Edison Jaquez BerkeleyBerkeley College honored alumnus Edison A. Jaquez of Perth Amboy, NJ, with the 2016 Alumni of the Year award during its Commencement ceremony on April 29, 2016. The award was presented at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, where more than 2,300 aspiring professionals were recognized for earning degrees and certificates from Berkeley College. The Alumni of the Year award is presented annually to a Berkeley College graduate who has enjoyed professional success and fulfillment through community service.

Mr. Jaquez is the Program Coordinator for the Civic Justice Corps at the Jewish Renaissance Foundation in Perth Amboy, NJ, where he is responsible for program planning and training, working with youth between the ages of 16 and 25. In addition to holding this position, Mr. Jaquez is the CEO/Founder of B-Men, and Co-Founder of BYOUtiful – mentoring organizations designed to enhance the lives of today’s youth. A motivational speaker who travels throughout New Jersey, he shares his story with audiences young and old.

Mr. Jaquez has been described as “a guardian angel traveling along the streets … steering the lives of local teens who might be tempted to make the wrong choices, back on the track toward success, self-esteem and integrity.”

During the Commencement ceremony, he told the graduates that he was the first in his family to graduate from college. He also recognized that one of his mentees, John Valdez, was part of the Class of 2016.

“I remember praying for this day, that I would be able to share my story with others – my struggles, my success,” Mr. Jaquez said. “Every day that I wake up, I love what I do, because I made sure that I never let my past define who I was.”

A native of the Dominican Republic, Mr. Jaquez moved to the United States in Perth Amboy, NJ, at the age of 7 with his family, where he still lives today with his fiancée and son. Mr. Jaquez graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration – Management from Berkeley College in 2009.
