Yesudas Choondassery of Little Falls Receives Berkeley College 2017 Honors Program Faculty Excellence Award

Yesudas Choondassery, PhD, Humanities and Social Sciences, Berkeley College School of Liberal Arts, of Little Falls, NJ, received the 2017 Honors Program Faculty Excellence Award at this year’s Honors Program reception at the Chart House in Weehawken, NJ, on August 4, 2017. The reception also recognized more than 70 Berkeley College Honors scholars for their research papers and projects which were presented earlier in the day at a Research Symposium held at Berkeley College in Midtown Manhattan.

The Honors Program Faculty Award is based on the evaluations and nominations of the Honors students, service to the program, and the number of honors courses taught. In accepting the award, Dr. Choondassery said, “I am really proud of this. What gives me satisfaction in this job are the smiles and sense of accomplishment that I find on the faces of my students after they defend their thesis papers. It’s beyond words!”

Dr. Choondassery has taught Berkeley College Honors scholars since 2011, and Honors scholars enrolled in the Directed Honors Research course online since 2012. In addition, he teaches introductory courses in philosophy and ethics, as well as Feminist Thought, Social Justice Philosophies, and Gender, Race and Class. Dr. Choondassery earned his PhD in Social Ethics and MPhil in Religion and Society from Drew University in Madison, NJ, an MA in Justice Studies from Fordham University in New York, NY, and a BA in Philosophy with minor in Sociology from Kerala University in Kerala, India. Dr. Choondassery has presented papers at international conferences and is an accomplished author.

The requirements of the Honors Program at Berkeley College are distinguished by scholarship and service. Scholars must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, complete four consecutive theme-based, interdisciplinary honors seminars with a B or better, and develop, write, and present an honors thesis at an Honors Symposium. Research topics in the students’ major fields of study included societal issues related to body image; consumer behavior and environmental impacts; criminal justice, law and ethics; cultural norms, gender stereotyping, and personal/national identity; fashion; healthcare; and interior and architectural design.

The Honors Program at Berkeley College was created in 2011 to attract and retain highly motivated, high-achieving students pursuing Bachelor’s degrees. There are five learning communities, located in Woodbridge and Woodland Park, NJ, Midtown Manhattan, White Plains, NY, and Berkeley College Online®. Each community has 15 to 20 students.
