In May 2017, Berkeley College expanded its signature volunteerism event, Community Service Day, to a weeklong initiative. During Community Service Week, more than 440 Berkeley faculty, staff, alumni, Board of Trustees members and students provided 2,100 volunteer hours to 43 community organizations in New Jersey and New York. The initiative builds on Community Service Day, which began in 2010.

“Community Service Week at Berkeley College helps build awareness about the role nonprofit organizations play in keeping our local communities strong and vibrant,” said Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College.

FiOS1 News spoke with President Smith while he volunteered with Berkeley College staff and students at the Food Bank for Westchester on May 23, 2017. Click here to watch the news segment.

Community Service Week began on Sunday, May 21, 2016. Berkeley College in Woodland Park, NJ, hosted the 2017 Walk to Cure Arthritis New Jersey. Additional walks that day included the AIDS Walk in Central Park, NY, and Great Strides for Cystic Fibrosis in Paramus, NJ.

“This is the third year the Berkeley Cares program has come here,” said Linda Hoffman, Director, Alfred H. Baumann Free Public Library. “It speaks volumes that Berkeley College is so dedicated to this community and to our library.”

During the week, the College served nonprofit organizations in Bergen, Essex, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties in New Jersey, and in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Rockland and Westchester counties in New York.

Community Service Week is an initiative of Berkeley Cares, which throughout the year assists charities in the critical areas of food, shelter, health and student success.
