NEW JERSEY CONGRESSMAN AND BRONX BOROUGH PRESIDENT TO
ADDRESS BERKELEY COLLEGE GRADUATES AT 2011 COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

Dario A. Cortes, PhD, President of Berkeley College, is pleased to announce that New Jersey Congressman Donald M. Payne and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. will address graduates at the Berkeley College 2011 Commencement Ceremony. Each speaker will receive an honorary degree at the ceremony that will take place Friday, April 29, 2011, at the IZOD Center, 50 Route 120 in East Rutherford, NJ.

Approximately 1,400 students from Berkeley College campuses in New Jersey and New York, and Berkeley College Online will receive Baccalaureate or Associate degrees at this year’s Commencement. Walter A. Brower, EdD, Berkeley College Trustee Emeritus, will be recognized with an honorary degree during the ceremony.

“As we celebrate Berkeley College’s 80 years of changing lives, we recognize the legacy of leadership that is our history,” Dr. Cortes said. “We are honored that Congressman Donald M. Payne and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. will share their experiences, which reflect the belief that education is a critical component of lifelong success.”

Congressman Payne, a native of Newark and New Jersey’s first African American Congressman, was elected to a 12th term in 2010. He serves as Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, and is a senior member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Diaz is a lifelong resident of the Bronx, and was elected as Bronx Borough President in April 2009. He previously served seven years in the State Legislature representing the 85th Assembly District. During his seven terms in the State Legislature, Mr. Diaz was a champion for working families in the Bronx.
