Kevin L. Luing, Chairman, Berkeley College Board of Trustees, has announced that Michael J. Smith began his tenure as Berkeley College President on June 9, 2015.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to welcome Michael J. Smith as President of Berkeley College,” said Mr. Luing. “Michael has served the Berkeley College organization with distinction for 19 years and brings a deep commitment to our mission of educating students and leading them into dynamic careers. He is a proven leader whose vision for the future of the College is rooted in Berkeley’s tradition of innovation and putting students first.”
“Berkeley College is on the cusp of a major milestone in our history as we approach our 85th anniversary in 2016. We have a strong foundation and must continue building on this legacy,” said President Smith.
In a message to students today, President Smith said he would visit every campus (there are nine of them in New Jersey and New York, plus Berkeley College Online®) adding, “When I get the opportunity to meet you, I want to hear about your ideas and ambitions for the future. Very importantly, I want to hear about your commitment to yourself to walk across the graduation stage.”
Prior to becoming President, Mr. Smith served in key leadership positions at Berkeley, including Senior Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer of BES Inc., the corporate office of Berkeley College. He was also Treasurer for the Berkeley College Board of Trustees and Campus Operating Officer of the Berkeley College, White Plains, NY location. In addition, he has served as an evaluation team member for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, a regional accrediting organization covering the mid-Atlantic region.
Under Mr. Smith’s leadership, Berkeley College garnered numerous best workplace and best employer awards. He is known for his accomplishments in transforming the College’s technology infrastructure and instituting a centralized approach for organizational management and services.
Before joining Berkeley College, Mr. Smith was Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer of MetLife Realty Group. He also has been serving since 2011 as a member of the Westchester County Board of Legislators, and is currently chairman of its Economic Development and Capital Projects Committee. From 2005 to 2011, Mr. Smith served on the Valhalla Union Free School District Board of Education, where his peers elected him President of the Board of Education for three consecutive years.
Mr. Smith is a Certified Public Accountant and a Chartered Financial Analyst. He holds an MBA degree in Finance from Fordham University Gabelli School of Business and a BS degree in Accounting from Fairfield University.
Mr. Smith and his wife Marie have two children, Gabrielle and Jordan.
