BERKELEY COLLEGE TO HONOR LACHANEE SCOTT
AS 2018 ROBERT MAHER AWARD RECIPIENT

Berkeley College

Berkeley College student Lachanee Scott will receive the Robert Maher Award at the College’s Commencement ceremony on Friday, May 11, 2018, at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. The award is given to a graduate who has met high standards of academic excellence while overcoming personal, professional or financial obstacles.

Now a resident of Newark, NJ, Ms. Scott was a bright youngster during her early school years and showed great promise growing up in her native country of Jamaica. She had ambitions to earn a college degree and eventually become a judge. After immigrating to the United States at the age of 13 along with her older brother, however, life did not work out as they expected and she returned to Jamaica where she graduated from high school. Ms. Scott persevered when she and her brother returned to the United States.  Within a month’s time she enrolled at Berkeley College to continue pursuing her dream.

Yet, her residential situation and family circumstances befell her again. She and her brother went their separate ways. There were times when her struggles made Ms. Scott consider leaving college and going to work full-time, but she persevered.

At this year’s Berkeley College Commencement ceremony, Ms. Scott will receive a Bachelor’ degree in Legal Studies summa cum laude. She has been inducted into three national honor societies, and is founder and president of the Berkeley College Newark Caribbean Club. Perhaps the best achievement in her life thus far is that Ms. Scott has secured a position as Records Associate at McCarter & English law firm and expects to apply to law school in the near future.
