BERKELEY COLLEGE STUDENTS SHARE LOVE OF READING
WITH NEWARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THROUGH

CELEBRITY READ PROGRAM

 Berkeley College

Photo Caption: In February 2018, Berkeley College students and associates shared their love of reading with elementary school students at the Quitman Street Community School in Newark, NJ. The initiative was part of the Celebrity Read program organized through the United Way of Essex and West Hudson. The program has been promoting literacy in Newark schools for more than 25 years. “Every year, the United Way of Essex and West Hudson looks forward to partnering with the students of Berkeley College,” said Machelle Lassiter, Volunteer Engagement Manager, United Way of Essex and West Hudson. “Through this partnership, the students share their love for reading and their knowledge about the importance of reading.” The student volunteers were also excited about the event. “The classrooms were filled with so much positive energy,” said Janeisha Allen of Summit, one of the student readers from Berkeley College. “This experience provided enrichment for the children, but also enriched us,” added student Francis Martinez of West New York. Pictured (Top, L to R) are Ms. Martinez; Heather Eaton-Dwyer, Assistant Dean, System Events and Student Judiciaries, Student Development and Campus Life; student Dimerys Sanchez of East Orange; and Ms. Allen. Below, with cards from the students, are (L to R) Ms. Martinez and Ms. Allen. The collaboration with Celebrity Read is an initiative of Berkeley Cares, which throughout the year assists charities in the critical areas of food, shelter, health and student success.
