Elisa Ayala Hosts Operation Christmas Child Shoebox

Photo CaptionElisa Ayala of Paterson, NJ, a Berkeley College student, believes it doesn’t take much to perform an act of kindness.  When representatives of the Berkeley College campus in Woodland Park, NJ, decided to sponsor a toy drive for less fortunate children, Ms. Ayala got the word out.  She immediately posted a note on her Facebook page encouraging people to donate. “If anyone has a toy he or she would like to donate, one that is new and in its original package, please contact me, and I will pick it up or we can meet,” she said.  Her message got the ball rolling, according to Janelle Giles, Berkeley College Director, Student Development and Campus Life, with donations going to local organizations, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Paterson and Passaic, the Three Doctors Foundation in Newark, and the New Jersey Community Development Corporation in Paterson. “Elisa started a social media frenzy and was successful in filling 18 shoeboxes.  She’s that kind of student – one who makes community service a priority,” Ms. Giles said. “It’s always the right time to help the less fortunate, but even more so during this holiday season,” Ms. Ayala said. “Putting a smile on a child’s face is something we should always want to do.”
