Joseph Charleman, CST, CSFA, CRCST, LPN, Chair, Surgical Technology and Surgical Processing Technician programs, Berkeley College School of Health Studies, and a team comprised of alumni, students and faculty, were honored during their most recent medical mission to Guayaquil, Ecuador, at a dinner hosted by the United States Consul General to Ecuador. The medical mission took place in cooperation with Healing the Children New Jersey®, from January 20 through February 16, 2016. The team leader was Richard Schlussel, MD, Board-Certified Urologist and Faculty Member, Columbia Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. Mr. Charleman served as trip administrator.

“The feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment cannot be put into words,” Mr. Charleman said. “The opportunity for students and faculty to participate in a global healthcare experience and apply interventions through skills they learned within the classroom is education at its highest level.”

One night, Dr. Schlussel told the following story.

“We finished late and stumbled out of the operating room to speak with the mom of the boy we operated on. We explained what we did and that he had done very well. The mother asked a few questions, then started to tremble. Something dawned on her. She asked, ‘Pardon me, do you mean my son is normal inside now and won’t need tubes?’ We answered yes. It seemed she couldn’t imagine this was possible – that he’d be healthy. She started shaking and sobbing and hugging us and said ‘God bless all of you and your families.’ ”

The focus of this medical mission was pediatric urology surgery for children born with congenital defects. Prior to leaving on the trip, Berkeley College faculty and students sterilized and packed the medical equipment and surgical instrumentation for the mission. Each surgical intervention lasted from three to eight hours. The team performed 26 surgeries.
