BERKELEY COLLEGE PRESENTS THE
DETAILED, WELL-CRAFTED AND LYRICAL ART OF LAURA SHECHTER
Berkeley College is presenting the artwork of Laura Shechter at its Midtown Manhattan Gallery, 3 East 43rd Street, New York City. The exhibit is on display from June 1 through 30—Monday through Friday—from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. An artist’s reception will be held on Wednesday, June 3 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Ms. Shechter graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in Fine Arts. She studied with noted painter Ad Reinhardt and considers him a great influence in her work. Since 1967, Ms. Shechter has been creating still life art in oil, watercolor, pencil, silverpoint and lithographic prints. In 2002, she started painting and drawing photo-based cityscapes.
In describing her work, Ms. Shechter said, “I am a contemporary realist whose work is detailed, well-crafted and lyrical, with strong colors and decoration. My definition of beauty fits within the aesthetics of realism and feminist art ideas.”
Ms. Shechter has taught and lectured at the Parsons School of Design and the National Academy Museum, both in New York, NY. In 2002, she was elected to the National Academy of Art. She has shown her work many times over the years, including solo exhibitions at the Green Mountain Gallery, New York, NY; the Forum Gallery, New York, NY; and the University of Richmond, VA. Other exhibitions include the Art Institute of Chicago, IL, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, MA; the New York Public Library, NY; and the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
