BERKELEY COLLEGE JOINS WITH COLLEGES NATIONWIDE
IN THE 13TH ANNUAL RECYCLEMANIA COMPETITION
 TO HELP REDUCE CAMPUS WASTE

Berkeley College students, staff and faculty joined with 523 college communities nationwide in reducing waste during the 13th Annual RecycleMania Tournament. This year, participating schools collected 90.3 million pounds of recyclables and organic materials and prevented the release of the equivalent of nearly 121,436 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Weekly results were tracked throughout the two-month tournament. Altogether, Berkeley College prevented the release of 73 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent into the atmosphere, which amounts to the energy consumption of six households or keeping 14 cars off of the road for two months. In a friendly Berkeley College in-house competition among the seven College locations, the Midtown Manhattan location was named RecycleMania Tournament Champion for the Most Waste Reduction and the White Plains location won for the Most Recycling.

“RecycleMania provided a great opportunity for the Berkeley community to engage in recycling and waste reduction,” said Jeffrey Ehalt, Berkeley College Director of Operations and Interim Director of Sustainability. “These environmentally friendly practices now will be carried with each person throughout his or her life at home, school and work.”
