BERKELEY COLLEGE NEWARK CAMPUS
HOSTS THE PARENT UNIVERSITY PROGRAM

Berkeley College recently hosted the kickoff event for The Parent University program in Newark, NJ. The program, initiated by TEAM Charter Schools, equips parents with the skills and resources they need to help their children succeed in school. A series of free classes organized around the arts, advocacy and awareness will be offered at the Berkeley College Newark Campus from February to May.

“Parents are our biggest allies,” said Tia Morris, Chief Community Officer, TEAM Charter Schools, at the kickoff event. “This collaborative effort follows a model that was successful in cities such as Boston and Philadelphia. It is the committee of parents who have done whatever they can to bring this program to fruition for the success of our children.”

Maureen Daily-Barnett, Co-Chair of the Parent Committee, has raised two children who have gone on to college, and is parent to a third student in the Newark school system. “It has been an amazing year for me as a parent,” said Ms. Daily-Barnett. “We need every school in the City to be represented through this program.”

“Early success in school and in life means continued success of these same parents and students in college and beyond,” said Stan Holland, Berkeley College Campus Operating Officer, Newark Campus. “Research has shown that parents can increase a child’s academic success in school and in life through their involvement with schools and communities. Effective parent involvement improves student morale, attitudes and academic achievement across all subject areas. Even if you are not a parent, Berkeley College encourages you to become involved with The Parent University program.”

A leader in business education for 80 years, Berkeley College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and enrolls nearly 9,000 students — including more than 800 international students — in its Baccalaureate and Associate degree programs.
